In Memoriam

Harry Allen Paulk, 80, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2017.

Harry was full of integrity and was known for his great, sometimes irreverent, and always witty sense of humor. His was a rich life full of love, music and laughter, and he leaves everyone who loves him with his legacy of a life well lived.

Harry was born in 1937 in Memphis, to the late John Lester and Mae Webb Paulk. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Jean Davis and Jane Nunnelee, his brother-in-law and friend, George Shannon, and his son, Kevin Paulk.

Harry graduated from Messick High School in Memphis and Memphis State University, served in the United States Army, and retired from BlueCross BlueShield in 1996. He was a dedicated member of Brainerd Lodge #736 F&AM, where he was currently serving as Worshipful Master. Harry was also a member of the Scottish Rite.

Harry was devoted to his family, friends and his many interests and pursuits, and he exemplified kindness, commitment and the value of serving others in his myriad volunteer endeavors, including Northside Neighborhood House, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, and maintaining the gourds for his beloved purple martins at Tree of Life Park.

A lifelong learner with a deep appreciation of nature, he loved being on the river, sitting by a fire listening to and playing music, and hitting the road with his adoring wife to visit family or witness magnificent martin roosts all over the country.

Harry is survived by his wife of 57 years, Donna Atkins Paulk; his sister, Lesta Shannon; his children, Kelly Paulk (David Strozak), Brian Paulk, Laurie Winston (Tom), his grandchildren, Hank and Lucy, and his sweet dog, Della.

His memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 18, at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Purple Martin Conservation Association (purplemartin.org).
